The Gates Family Philanthropic Timeline

This timeline highlights some of the Gates Family's donations facilitated through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.


-1995 – The Lakeside School receives a $5 million gift to support Lakeside Now: A Capital Campaign Challenge Fund.

-1995 – The University of Washington Foundation receives a $13 million grant over 10 years to establish the Mary Gates Scholarship.

-1996 – The International Rescue Committee receives a $10,000 gift from the Gates Family.

-1997 – The Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology receives a $70,000 gift from the Gates Family.

-1997 – The Gates Family gives a $1 million in support of Operation Smile.

-1998 – The Future Generations program receives a grant to support family planning in India.

-1999 – The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is formed.

-1999 – The West Seattle High School receives a grant to support technology adoption.

-1999 – The Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture, and Recreation receive a grant to build and support libraries in low-income communities.

-1999 – The Foundation gives Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries receives a $4 million grant to provide public access to libraries through the internet.

-1999 – Our Little Brothers and Sisters of Haiti receive a grant to support a hospital and clinic.

-2000 – The Friends of the Foundation for Community Development receives a $5 million grant to support communities in Mozambique.

-2000 – The College Success Foundation received over $8 million to establish the Washington State Achievers Scholarship Program.

-2000 - The Foundation gives a $4 million grant to the New Technology Foundation to support the first phase of the Western States New Technology Public School system.

-2001 – Moxie Firecracker Films receive a $1 million grant to create documentaries about the AIDS crisis.

-2001 – Housing Hope receives a grant to construct the Vision House for families in crisis during transitions.

-2002 – The Dominican University receives a $1 million grant to support its library internship program.

-2002 - The Washington Wilderness Coalition receives a grant to educate youth about wilderness survival skills, and team building.

-2003 – The Carter Center receives a gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to support the Carter Center Endowment.

-2003 – The Foundation gives a $1 million to Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance to support the reduction of HIV incidence in conjunction with the Malawi Women’s Empowerment Project.

-2004 – Save the Children Federation receives emergency aid for areas in Asia affected by an earthquake-generated tsunami.

-2004 – The Foundation gives Mercy Corps $500, 000 for emergency aid to tsunami damaged areas in Asia.

-2005 – The Program for Appropriate Technology in Health receives a $1 million grant to support operations.

-2005 – The Foundation grants $5 million to the Freedom from Hunger program, which improves microfinance for very poor people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

-2006 – The United Nations Foundation receives a $29 million grant.

-2006 – The program for Green Africa receives a $28 million grant to support poof farmers needing agricultural technology.

-2006 – In an effort to expand banks in poor African countries, Opportunity International Inc. recives a $5 million grant.

-2006 – The Ministry of Culture of The Republic of Latvia receives a grant to develop and support public libraries.

-2006 – The Foundation grants $13 million to support International Development Enterprises, which developed vegetable markets in Ethiopia, Zambia, Nepal, and Myanmar.
